CLOSING PANEL: Multiple Crises, One Cause? // #PraGA16 Spring Conference

The European project has been in turmoil ever since the financial and economic crisis of 2008/2009. The crises and struggles are multiple, but also overlapping. While the media are all about the “refugee crisis” today, the “Greek crisis” is for long not over yet. And while climate change continues unfolding into a serious crisis at our doorsteps, we see a rise of undemocratic policies across Europe and in particular in CEE.

While some of the crises, struggles, and challenges Europe is facing today are of external nature and other rather internal, they might share some common causes or treats - lack of democracy and (young) citizens’ participation, lack of belief in post-materialist ideas or values, lack of belief in human rights, equality and the rule of law, lack of empathy and solidarity, and thus inherently also lack of belief in Europe as such. Do they also share common solutions?

Panelists:
- Boris Dittrich, Advocacy Director LGBT Program, Human Rights Watch (NL)
- Aleksandra Śniegocka-Goździk, Head of WomenMain FB event: https://www.facebook.com/events/198545203872199/

EUROPEAN PANEL: How Do We Crush the Far-Right in Europe? // #PraGA16 Spring Conference

With a short exception for Hungary, the V4 societies have been ever since the summer finding themselves in the middle of a “refugee crisis” without refugees. While particularly harsh policies and practices as well as lower prospects for integrating in the “host” societies made most of the refugees avoid the countries, “concerned citizens” have been marching with gallows in the middle of Prague’s main square or panicky reporting to the police anyone with a “different” appearance.

However, it is not only the refugees who are a potential target for the far-right in V4. Anti-gender, anti-LGBTQ movements were on the rise in the whole region already prior to the refugee crisis. They continue gainin support in some V4 countries until today, be it in form of anti-same-sex-marriage campaign in Slovakia or anti-abortion laws in Poland, making everyone differing from the mainstream a potential target of hate speech or hate crimes.

Meanwhile a range of commentators have criticized the division making between “pro” and “against” camps and advised the different groups to simply “talk” to their neighbours. Yet distinguishing between “fascist” or “neonazi groups” aiming at dismantling human rights and citizens who are "concerned", "insecure" or "afraid” proves difficult in everyday life and almost impossible when on a demonstration. Can we crush the far-right and at the same time build an inclusive society for all?

OPENING PANEL: The East is back? // #PraGA16 Spring Conference

Since the turbulent year or 1989, the Visegrad societies seemed set on walking a path towards political and cultural “Westernization”. Recent developments, however, show that despite improving economic situation, the legacy of authoritarian mindset, a disillusionment with the democratic system, and relative mistrust in the “Brussels Dictate” push Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, and Slovakia back towards political insecurity. Last year’s constitutional crisis in Poland, election of a neo-nazi into the Slovak Parliament, Chinese president’s visit to Prague, and rising levels of xenophobia are met with increasing show of resistance and solidarity of the civil society - be it at the Balkan refugee route, or, most recently on the streets of Warsaw.

Despite these efforts, the region seems “on the move”, as the notion of “Central Europe” starts being increasingly replaced with the adjective “Eastern” or simply titled “the East.” How do we bring V4 back to the “center”? Our expert panelists will explore the changing attitudes of the V4 countries towards the European project in the context of the multiple current crises, and their general shift towards “the East.” Together we will brainstorm answers to the crucial question of our days: How do we bring V4 back on a path towards Europe?
