35 Young Greens from all over the world gathered in central Brussels last week to show their convictions about the direction energy policy should take. The anti-nuclear action took place on Monday, December 5th, a cold but sunny day – ideal conditions for the vivid and colourful performance which took place.
The action was a part of the Cop17 Energy Revolution workshop organised by FYEG from the 2nd to the 6th of December. The aim of the action was to show how important it is for the EU and all countries to make the right, responsible political choice when defining its energy strategy.
Kasia Dmochowska, one of the organisers of the workshop said “We urge leaders at national and EU level to support renewable sources of energy with all funds and subsidies available. Clean and long lasting energy such as wind, solar power should be implemented more in all the countries. These are forms of energy which are sustainable, as well as safe for current and future generations, while the safety of nuclear energy can never be guaranteed, as evidenced by the series of failures and disasters witnessed, from Chernobyl to Fukishima. In addition, there is great potential for new jobs in the renewable energy sector.”
During the action, activists interpreted their vision of a future dependant on nuclear energy and other old, polluting sources such as coal. It is a scenario in which the lives and wellbeing of all citizens are in great peril...
In addition, the choice to stick with nuclear energy is often not an honest or transparent one. Nuclear energy often has strong links with business interests and lobbyists, portrayed here by a suspect looking character with a briefcase... |
